The Diocese of Columbus is on the route named after St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first American-born saint to be canonized by the Catholic Church. A convert to Catholicism, the young mother and widow was drawn to the Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton opened the first free Catholic school for girls in America in 1810. Her work laid the foundation for what is now the parochial school system. A relic of Mother Seton from The Museum of Catholic Art and History will be on display at the pilgrimage locations.
PLENARY INDULGENCE
A plenary indulgence is available for any of the Christian faithful participating in the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage between May 17 and July 16, 2024. The elderly, infirm, or those who cannot leave their homes for a serious reason, and who participate in spirit with the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, uniting their prayers, pains, or inconveniences with Christ and the pilgrimage, may also receive the indulgence.
The conditions for receiving the indulgence include all of the following: participating in the pilgrimage, making a sacramental Confession and receiving Holy Communion in the days leading up to or just after the pilgrimage participation, and praying for the intentions of the Holy Father. The indulgence may be applied to the souls in Purgatory.
“Man, who by sin voluntarily left his Father’s house, realizes what he lost and gradually makes the decisive step of coming to himself: ‘I will arise and go to my Father’ (Lk 15:18). The certainty that God ‘is good and loves me’ is stronger than shame and discouragement: it sheds new light on one’s sense of guilt and personal unworthiness. […] The one important thing for the father is that his son has been found. The embrace between him and the prodigal son becomes a celebration of forgiveness and joy. This is a moving Gospel scene that reveals in full detail the attitude of our Father in heaven, who is ‘rich in mercy’ ” (cf. Eph 2:4).
EWTN: Forgiving Love of the Father
“Because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began”.
Luke 15:24
